Paul T. Albert Memorial School (P.T.A.M.S.) is a public K-12 school with an enrollment of around 108 students.
Since 100% of our student population is Alska Native we are a Dual Language school. This
means that our Kindergarten through 5th grade students learn to speak, read, and write in both Yugtun and English. Students, teachers, and community members are encouraged to participate in Language Of The Day (LOD). This means that in the hallways, office, and cafeteria on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays people are encouraged to speak Yugtun to the best of their abilities. ( Monday= Pekyun, Wednesday= Pingayirin, Friday= Tallimirin) On Tuesdays and Thursdays people are encouraged to speak English in these areas.
The Elementary school is arranged into Dual Language Teaching Teams, one teacher teaches in Yugtun and the other in English. English Language Arts and Math are taught in English. Yugtun Language Arts, Science and Social Studies are taught in Yugtun. Each grade participates in Language Of the Day Activities in both Yugtun and English throughout the week, for example the 4th and 5th grade write journal entries in Yugtun on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and in English Tuesday and Thursday.
